Weekend binge watch: The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel
The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel is a show created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and stars Rachel Brosnahan. In this highly acclaimed show, a housewife in the 1950s decides to become a stand-up comic. Jeslyn weighs in with her review.
Hooked
Mrs Maisel is a comedy I came across in the search of trying to watch something I haven’t seen before, instead of watching Friends or How I Met Your Mother for approximately the 10th 15th time.
There was one episode available on the Amazon Prime YouTube page, how generous of them, and it was definitely enough to hook me!
To the point where I actually signed up for Amazon Prime (the one week free trial) immediately. I didn’t need a week for this show; I watched the remaining seven episodes in one night. I’m well-trained for this.
The Story
Mrs Miriam Maisel has a beautiful life in 1950’s New York: The lovely apartment, two little children, a loving husband and great parents (played brilliantly by Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub).
In typical 1950’s fashion, Miriam is a housewife, she puts on her cold cream and curlers after her husband has gone to sleep and gets up a little earlier than him to make sure she looks pretty when he wakes up. She cooks brisket and gifts it to the manager at the comedy club to ensure her husband gets a good spot for his stand-up routine.
Miriam, a very supportive wife takes notes for her husband as to which of his jokes gets the most laughs and all of this research comes in handy when her life starts coming off the rails in what can only be called a quarter-life crisis, and she then takes to the stage herself and realises that perhaps she has a talent for stand up.
Should You Watch It?
Miriam is hilarious, witty and very daring for her time. The cast is great, the costumes are beautiful and MarvellousMrs Maisel deserves all the praise.
As the credits roll after the first episode, while I’m thinking that this is the best show I’ve seen in a long time, I see an all too familiar name: Amy Sherman-Palladino; creator and producer of Gilmore Girls, and it all made sense.
In true ‘strong, fast-talking female’ style, Amy made this show for me, and if you like Gilmore Girls or just well-written comedy, you will love this show too. I cannot fault it and I cannot wait for the second season.
