Neill Blomkamp’s New Sci-fi Project, Oats Starring Sigourney Weaver

If you check his IMDB, it still says that Neill Blomkamp is working on an untitled Alien project, but it’s clear that we got Alien: Covenant instead of the Alien 5 project that he was originally working on.

A few weeks ago, we got a trailer for his upcoming independent science fiction film studio project called Oats Studios, a studio that creates experimental short films. We got two trailers before, and now the first volume from what appears to be an ongoing saga. You can watch the full volume below,. It’s 20 minutes long, and appears to be a prologue for a much bigger story.

As we’ve become accustomed to, Blomkamp once again explores the relationship between the oppressor and oppressed, in a dystopian future. He’s pretty much stuck with this setting through all of his feature films, including District 9, Elysium and CHAPPIE. It seems to be working out for him so far, with many people hailing the visuals, despite a few criticisms about the dialogue.

I’m particularly excited about Oats Studios because it appears to be operating well outside of the mainstream Hollywood studio system; meaning that there may be less corporate bullshit impacting the quality and messaging of content produced at this studio. It’s exciting because this studio (right now) appears to be focused on telling great stories by talented (and famous) people, through crowd sourcing. It just seems like a big “Fuck You!” after they threw him off 2017’s Alien project.

I’m hoping that in the future this will extend, providing an opportunity for up-and-coming filmmakers to make their mark in the industry without having to deal with major studios and the politics that comes with that. Only time will tell.

You can check out more about this project on the Oats Studios official website. There’s also an option to support the studio by donating as well, so if you think this was awesome, and you’re keen to see a studio that making high quality content and operating independently, I suggest you put your money where your mouth is.
