Fences Spoiler-free Review
Call me uncultured, but going in to Fences, I had no idea what it was about or what to expect. My brain reminded me of a tidbit of general knowledge tucked away in there, that Denzel Washingotn and Viola Davis had starred in a stage play of the production a few years ago. Then Google told me it was in 2010 for a 13-week run at the Cort Theatre, directed by Kenny Leon.
So when I saw that this film was coming out, directed by and starring Washington, reprising his role alongside Viola Davis; I mean com on, I had to see it.
Fences is awesome. Whatever your expectations, you will be blown away by the amazing performances of Denzel Washington, and especially Viola Davis. The film does not necessarily follow the tropes of Hollywood drama (I mean, it’s adapted from a stage play after all).
It feels more like we, as the audience, is hanging out with these people; a fly on the wall as they let us in to their most intimate moments with family and friends. We get to see their joy, and their sadness, their goodness, and the most ugly parts of them up close, and uncensored. It’s a truly human experience that weare seeing unfold one minute at a time.
And all of this makes for one unique, truly captivating experience. Definitely a must-see.
