The Devil Wears Prada 2 Spoiler-Free Review

by Cineman

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is directed by David Frankel, returning to the world he helped define, with Aline Brosh McKenna and Lauren Weisberger also back on script duties. The sequel sees the return of Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt, while bringing in a slate of new faces that expand the orbit of this glossy, high-stakes fashion universe.

Once again, we step into high fashion through characters who have evolved, especially Andy Sachs, and others who have very much stayed the same, for better or worse. The film tries to shift gears, aiming for something more reflective. It touches on the instability of modern work, the slow erosion of journalism, and the way entire industries are being reshaped by venture capital. There is a clear intention to say something bigger this time.

And yet, it all feels surprisingly light.

For a film that wants to wrestle with big ideas, it rarely digs deep enough to leave a mark. It is watchable, even enjoyable in moments, but largely forgettable. It does not carry the same bite or quotability that made the original such a cultural staple.

Visually, it also feels like a step back. There is a noticeable dullness in the palette. Where the first film had texture, richness, and a sense of tactile luxury (and contrast in Andy’s life), this one feels flatter, almost too clean and clinical.

From a character perspective, the film plays it safe. It sets up conflict, positioning characters against each other, but never fully commits. There is a reluctance to let anyone become truly unlikeable. That tension, that sharp edge, was part of what made the original so compelling. It balanced big thematic ideas with messy, complicated people inside a world that was both superficial and powerful. Here, something is missing.

There is a lack of depth, both in revisiting the emotional threads of the first film and in fully exploring the new themes it introduces. Somewhere along the way, it chooses to be a fun night out rather than something more substantial. And maybe that is enough for some audiences. But for a sequel to something this iconic, you cannot help but feel it could have aimed higher.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases in theatres on 01 May 2026.

Overall Team Rating: 6/10
