Between What’s Said and What’s Felt: Unspoken Premieres at the Joburg Film Festival

Cape Town, South Africa — Unspoken, a South African short film directed by Stephen Nagel and produced by BTG Productions, with Kirstin Lee Grey Erasmus, will have its official premiere at the Joburg Film Festival, taking place from 3 to 8 March 2026 in Johannesburg. Screening dates and times will be announced in due course.

Set largely around a single encounter, Unspoken follows two estranged siblings who reunite after many years apart, only to realise that time, distance, and circumstance have left them struggling to communicate. The film unfolds as an intimate, emotionally charged moment that reflects on what remains when words are no longer enough.

Grounded in realism and shaped by moments of levity and subtle surrealism, the film reflects on memory, childhood, and the emotional residue of separation. These elements surface gently, mirroring how the past lingers alongside the present, especially when words fail. The film engages with themes of family, migration, class, and identity, drawing from a distinctly South African context while remaining emotionally universal.

Speaking about the film, director Stephen Nagel notes that Unspoken was driven by a desire to explore how love and memory persist even when language is lost. “I wanted the silence to do as much work as the dialogue,” he says. “The film trusts the audience to feel what the characters can no longer say.”

Produced independently and completed through the PESP5 programme, Unspoken represents a collaborative effort rooted in restraint and emotional precision. The film’s executive producers are Stephen Nagel and Dean Ravell. Unspoken stars Siphokazi Khuboni and Vuyo Sekonyela.

Following its Joburg Film Festival premiere, Unspoken will continue its journey on the local and international festival circuit, with further screenings and announcements to follow. See exclusive stills from the film below.
