Will these 10 Movies make 2015 the Highest Grossing December of All Time?

The lineup of movies that will be released in December 2015 has the box office licking its lips. Earlier this year I wrote a post speculating that 2015 could be a recording-breaking year for movies. Now it seems the potential is through the roof for what could possibly be the highest grossing December of all time.

We are just a couple of weeks away from a superb movie lineup over the Christmas month. December 2009 holds the highest grossing box office of all time with $1 636 900 000. That year saw the release of James Cameron’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time. Cameron’s record will probably still stand for another year, but the December record may be broken in a couple of weeks. Though this year lacks your typical family Christmas movie, there are movies that are suitable for all ages lined up. Below are 10 movies that you must watch in between your Christmas shopping:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Undoubtedly the most anticipated movie of the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is bound to dominate the Christmas period. After a decade long wait, the excitement and hype are high, meaning Christmas shopping may be put on hold during Star Wars’ rotation.

The seventh installment of Star Wars is arguably going to be the biggest geek fest of 2015, with a massive fan base that are guaranteed to flock to the cinemas to watch the next episode. It has been 38 years since the first Star Wars graced the big screen, how successful will the seventh movie be?

Sisters

The funniest women alive are back and this time, they want to throw the greatest party of all time. No better time than the Christmas period. Will you be watching the greatest party to be held in December? We suggest you do not try this at home.

Concussion

Will Smith addresses the dreaded “C-word” in this thrilling drama that shook the NFL. Based on a true story, this movie will not only open your eyes to the reality of concussions in American football, but it should see Will Smith return to the Oscar nomination list.

Not only is this a sports film about the number one sport in the US, American Football, but this film depicts the power of science and research to help the safety of sportsmen. Based on a true story, this movie is definitely worth watching.

The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino has returned with his 8th installment. With the background being purely snow, The Hateful Eight is well set to send a chill to northern hemisphere viewers. For more mature viewers, this movie is guaranteed to see a wave of movie goers at every cinema on earth. Tarantino has a massive following and his eighth movie will not fail to attract the following.

Macbeth

The infamous play is hitting the big screen and it is rumoured to be causing a stir among the Academy Award voters. With Fassbender making another outstanding performance, will you “Hail Macbeth”?

Shakespeare fans will no doubt lead the pack to the cinema to see his infamous story, Macbeth brought from theatre to screen.

Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Alvin and his brothers are back for the adventure of the month. If you have children or you wish to feel like a kid again, stop by the cinema and have a good laugh whilst watching talking chipmunks. Oh, and they sing!

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip may not be the most popular animated movie among adults and children, but this is the only animated movie of the Christmas season.

The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio has returned in spectacular fashion having redefined himself again. Working with Oscar winning director Alejandro Inarritu (Birdman, 2015), this movie could be the most intensely gripping movie of December.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy take on roles that will test them physically and mentally in The Revenant. A lot of action with an outstanding story, this movie will grip the attention of any film lover.

Daddy’s Home

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are back. Having been NYPD detectives in The Other Guys, they now take the role of being step dads. Looking for a good laugh and an opportunity to take a break from your shopping, watch two of Hollywood’s finest on the big screen.

In the Heart of the Sea

Chris Hemsworth has put down Thor’s Hammer, Mjolnir, and has set his eyes on earth’s largest animal. Academy Award winning director, Ron Howard, brings the legend of Moby Dick onto the big screen. Will Hemsworth conquer the might Moby Dick?

Joy

Academy Award winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence, has returned to work with David O. Russell and Bradley Cooper (Silver Lining Playbook and American Hustle). Do not be misled by Lawrence holding a shotgun, the movie has moments of smiles and cheers. It’s still the Christmas period!

Joy and In the Heart of the Sea are the “sleepers” of the month. With the appeal of unique stories, captivating visual effects and scenery, and not to forget, Hollywood’s lovable actors and actresses, these two movies should hold their own and add onto the accumulating box office. Date night? Definitely!

With a little something for everybody this December, all cinemas worldwide will be packed and Christmas shopping will be put on hold. This year’s December has a quality lineup of movies and there is a possibility the box office record will be broken in 2015.

Tendai

I’m a massive fan of movies, and occasionally I write about the movies I have watched and about the industry. Hopefully I provide insight and shed light into Hollywood. I am happy to have discussions about movies as they are extremely important to our society. 2hrs of our lives cannot be wasted by really poor movies.
