Furiosa Spoiler-Free Review
Legendary director George Miller is back with another Mad Max film. This time exploring the tragic past of the actual main character of 2015’s Fury Road, Furiosa. As this is a prequel, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role, with Chris Hemsworth playing the villain Dementus.
This film is fun, but it’s nowhere near as epic as Mad Max Fury Road. After watching Furiosa and being somewhat underwhelmed by the film, I struggled to put my finger on what the key problem was for me. Was it the extensive use of CGI over practical effects, the over-the-top performance by Hemsworth as the eccentric villain, the departure from the formula that worked so well in Fury Road – or something else? It may have been a combination of all f these things, although in fairness, we were never promised a film that had a similar formula to Fury Road, and I’d actually give Miller props for constantly innovating.
But I went back to watch Mad Max Fury Road, and it’s just a better film. It’s like saying the Chrysler 300 C looks like a Bentley. Until that Phantom pulls up. You know it when you see it. Rewatching Fury Road filled me with joy and excitement; it’s full of poetry and pomp and exhilarating stunts. and I couldn’t help but compare the two films.
In all fairness, Anya Taylor-Joy puts on an amazing performance and the film isn’t terrible. It’s just – in my opinion – living in the shadow of its far superior predecessor.
